150+ years later, and you’ve lost another battle, Bob.
And now that there will be an opening on Monument, might I make a suggestion:
Fighting for freedom, leading a slave revolt seems a hell of a lot more worthy of a monument tha n leaving the US army to lead another army in battle against the United States.

It’s kind of weird that the so famously-patriotic Americans have no ridiculous universally -celebrated holidays or regular celebrations to commemorate the Civil War.

One of the best things the US government ever did was turn Bobby Lee’s home in to a military cemetery so he couldn’t live there again.

Is that something that’s ever done? Is there a Spanish Civil War Day? That would be one confusing celebration.

Heritage not hate!
(no mention that the heritage is based on hate)
(also amusing that the loser flag is spotted all over the place in areas where it never existed when new, and in areas that were not on the loser side. I’ve seen plenty in western WA (a given in some parts of eastern WA) (WA wasn’t a state until 1889) ).

I was thinking the Soviet military parades, but their civil war and founding are the same thing

There’s a stretch of US 11 in VA called the Lee Highway. I wonder if they’re going to rename that too.

They already renamed Jefferson Davis Highway and Lee High way in Virginia.
As an aside my great, great u ncle is buried in Mrs Lee’s rise garden just to the left of the main entrance to Lee’s old house. He was one of the first to be buried there after fighting with the 63rd PA Infantry.

Technically, they could rename it the Lee Hwy for Robert Wright Lee

I used to live in VA, and haven’t been back in a few years. Thanks.

Maybe Sara Lee would have been a better choice.

They just took down the statue of the confederate soldier with his back to the north the other day. It was called Appomattox and had been up since 1889 in the heart of liberal Alexandria, VA.

I’m in the mountains in the western part of the state, there’s still plenty of roads/highways/etc named after rebels.
I moved here as a kid from Maine, where most everything was named for the natives the land was stolen from. It was a hell of a cultural shock.

Well, that didn’t go the way I expected. I thought the grandson was going to say some horribly racist thing and that his surprisingly open-minded congregation kicked him out. How silly of me.

A mai n gate at Ft . Bliss was named the Robert E Lee G ate until just recently. There’s still a J.E.B. Stuart road there as well. I always found it more than a little odd.

I got fucking trolled by the Kinja notification system (and I’m laughing my ass off about it now) .
I saw your notification, grabbed a fresh beer, and was getting ready to tee off on the “heritage not hate” argument for the n th time in my life.

And it’s not even really the right flag, so the heritage argument doesn’t fly

Oh yeah, I remember reading about the circle stars one.
The “Dixie” flag makes all these rough tough real men true “rebels” fighting for truth and justice.

The pedestal looks nice though, maybe they can turn it into a water fountain.
Maybe we should create a Confederate monument park where we just haphazardly dump all the junked statues, like Russia’s Fallen Monument Park. Kind of make them symbolic of their whole cause being on the junk heap of history.

Of course the Army has 10 bases named after Confederates including major ones like Ft. Bragg and Ft. Hood. And that doesn’t even get into buildings, roads, etc. named after traitors who went to war against their country to preserve the institution of slavery.
Completely appalling that we still have that, I can’t imagine how awful it must feel for black soldiers to be based somewhere named in honor of someone who wanted them in chains.
None of the other services have bases named after Confederates, and the Marines recently ordered the removal of any Confederate paraphernalia from their bases. The Navy does has one ship, USS Chancellorsville named in honor of a Confederate victory, with references to Lee and Stonewall Ja ckson (who was fatally wounded by friendly fire at Chan cellorsvill e).

I very much like this idea. That’s always one of the big stinks about the removal of a monument at least it is here in Missouri when this comes up.
